My Mind Speaks…..Belonging (A story about my Incubator: The City of Kimberley)

Image
We are all just trying to find a place where we feel like we belong. A place where people will laugh at our jokes and find our awkwardness cute; A place where we can all share memes and laugh till we cry; A place where our fragile bodies and minds are accepted and appreciated for what they are, as well as what they could be. A place of belonging is a happy place. Many of you may already know that I spent a couple of years of my life in a place called Kimberley. Kimberley; Capital City of the Northern Cape. I like to call this period of my life “The Incubation Period” because of the many lesson learned during my time there. I call it the incubation period because during my time there; I was just like an egg and Kimberley was the hen that kept me warm and it made sure that I hatch and live up to my full potential. Kimberley was a good incubator. No, allow me to rephrase; Kimberley was a great incubator. I moved to Kimberley in 2012 when I got my first job. All I knew about Kimberley at t...

She WAKES I missed the ignorance of truth         And avoidance of reality                                       The delusional confidence in youth   I envied the versions of me back then That walked with blind confidence                    Composed of blissful foolishness Deaf to the sounding of life   I had awoken to a mind and immediately Yearned for earlier moments As if my lies to myself were my truths And I was glad   Luckily this was just a fleeting valley stride That unknown to me was the long Way I had chosen by deciding to remain Could have been that I left no love to myself And also no Time to know me, ...

My Mind Speaks.... Taking Inventory

“I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It's something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we don't want to but because of what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself” - Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi These were the final words that sealed Zozibini’s Miss Universe victory. Words so powerful that they got me thinking: what if we replaced young girls and women with black people? What if we taught ourselves leadership? What if we rose above what society has labelled us to be? What if we started believing that we are the most powerful beings in the world and lived in that truth. What if instead of waiting to be given an opportunity, we created oppor...

My Mind Speaks..... Fact or Fiction

A Book Review: Stay with me Disclaimer: If you are planning to read the book please do not continue reading this article. It has spoilers so enter at your own risk. I personally do not believe in spoiler alerts. In fact before I read or watch anything I often want to know what it is about and assess if the content is the type I would like to spend my time on. It was not any different when I decided to read Stay with me, a book by a young Nigerian author. What initially attracted me to this book was that it was fiction. I am very picky about what I read but fiction is my favourite. I also have a weakness for autobiographies especially those written by people that survived or made it against all odds. I was initially introduced to fiction by neighbour back home when I was in grade 9. The first fictional book I ever read besides those we read for school was by Sydney Sheldon. I particularly liked his writing because he wrote about women who are talented and capable, but most impor...

My Mind Speaks....Billionaires Club

“I wanna be a billionaire so freaking bad. Buy all of the things I never had. Uh, I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine. Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen" Welcome to the Billionaires club. Just a few days ago I read an article that suggested that Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man is set to become the first ever trillionaire by 2026. My first reaction was “Yikes this guy is going to be really rich”, I mean up to this point in my life I have only known governments to be the only institutions that deal with trillions. Now if Jeff Bezos becomes a trillionaire (its strange to even write this word), does this mean he can afford to buy governments? Thinking about this made me understand why Americans lost their minds on twitter because the truth of the matter is that money comes with a lot of power and power comes with responsibility. We also know that humans are not known to handle power too well. Amid all the twitter meltdown I couldn’t help but reminisce about lesson...

My Mind Speaks …. Watch and Learn

HourGlass with Mbofho My Mind Speaks …. Watch and Learn In this blog you will hear a lot about people I have come across in this journey called life. Today we bring to life a lady called Nthabiseng. It is true that our names somewhat have an influence on who you grow up to be. I recently reconnected with Nthabiseng on WhatsApp the other day. I initially met Nthabiseng back in 2012 when I moved to Kimberley. Nthabiseng, Sister Vee and I shared a three-bedroom house and we all worked at the Office of the Auditor-General. To be quite honest I do not remember having any “Deep and Meaningful” conversations with Nthabi. She was quiet, I thought but she had quite a presence about her. Something about her made her look respectable . She only stayed in that house for a couple of months after I moved in. She had this ability to keep the house together. Especially because she only spoke when it was necessary and with a smile and she made a lot of sense. She was firm with her stance. Aft...

My Mind Speaks.... Purpose Power Impact

HourGlass with Mbofho My Mind Speaks……Purpose Power and Impact During the last years of my varsity days I spent most of my days listening to Lady Antebellums’ music, more specifically the song “I was here”. School was rough and had me questioning if that was what I really wanted to do (You know how us humans are like when things are not going our way). This song introduced purpose in my life in a meaningful way and I felt the urge to want to do something that matters and say something different. I wanted to touch a few hearts and leave nothing less than something that says I was here. But I did not know how? (Hands on head) or where to begin? Especially because the song refers to a lot of talented people like Mark Twain and Van Gough and song writers and people discovering cures. To top it all, I had no idea what my talent or gift was, so I felt so stuck (I refuse to incriminate myself further about that year lol, but you can ask Sandra). In that same year, Beyoncé released her ver...
